What is an occlusal splint?

An occlusal splint is a hard thin acrylic guard which covers the biting surfaces of the upper jaw. It directs the jaw into a position which relieves some pressure on the jaw joint and is an effective way of protecting your teeth against the damaging forces of bruxism, although it can’t stop you from clenching or grinding your teeth. It is meant to be worn during the night.
