What is a frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a short procedure to reduce the size of the either the lingual or labial frenum. The frenum is the soft tissue that connects the gum to the lip – the labial frenum – or connects the base of the tongue and the floor of the mouth – the lingual frenum. A frenectomy is required if the lingual frenum restricts the movement of the tongue or if the labial frenum pulls apart the two front teeth on the upper jaw. A frenectomy involves the use of soft tissue lasers to decrease the size of the frenum with minimal after effects, if at all.
